Some people learn better in a community of practice in a real-world setting.
Learning at all levels takes place outside formal education settings, in the home and family settings, at work with colleagues, in play with social groups, through volunteering with other community members, as part of hobbies with buddies or activities with sports coaches, with pastoral carers and mentors such as in faith groups etc. Peer-to-peer learning is central to CLOCK’s collaborative activities supported by more experienced peers, personal mentors facilitating collective engagement in a specific practice applied to ‘do’, ‘make’, ‘innovate’ ‘challenge’ or ‘repair’ something.
Young people should have the option to choose between learning in formal education and non-formal learning settings with equivalent learning opportunities such as those available in youth arts activities, sports, skateboarding, local or neighbourhood activities such as repair cafe, growing food on an allotment, recycling materials, beach or countryside litter pick-ups and local citizenship activities. Recognition of skills through non-formal learning should be available to all at secondary and tertiary levels as well as throughout their adult lives so that all learning counts!
CLOCK runs 3 types of programmes that:
- recognise non-formal learning that has already taken place
- identify skills gaps and co-design customised projects to develop required skills
- provide a work-based learning programme for a sector with reflective practice
All CLOCK programmes require participants to have personal and collective agency and learn how to be responsible and accountable to others, cooperating rather than competing and to be able to operate effectively within a collaborative project group that aims to accomplish purposeful goals in one or more practitioner settings.
